November 26, 2017

I created a logo for my friend's baking hobby shop, you can see it (but not buy it) in the ink section.  You can find her stuff on facebook and instagram at Back Alley Baked Goods.

I also added a drawing called "Connection" to the ink section.  This drawing was inspired by my experiences at my new job doing education and outreach about organ, tissue, and eye donation.

September 6, 2017

Added two watercolor and ink painting/drawings to the ink section.  One is a drawing from imagination of a chubby kitty and the other is a drawing from a photo of a different chubby kitty.

August 11, 2017

I've been busy adjusting to my new job and haven't been uploading as religiously as perhaps I should lately.  On the positive side, though, I'm consumed with the new job because I love it.  Tonight I finally added a few new drawings to the ink section.  They include a snake drinking tea, a dead owl, and a drawing of my friend's cat.

I highly recommend following me on social media if more timely updates are your thing - I just about always post work on FB, Instagram, and Twitter as soon as I draw it.

May 20, 2017

Moodles the Highland Cow has been added to the ink section.  I wish I had a more elegant explanation of how I chose the subject matter since the actual reason is purely simple-minded: his hair reminded me of spaghetti so I had him eat a giant bowl of it.

It's a strange thing to be someone who makes art.  When normal people have weird thoughts that something looks like something else they probably muse on it a moment and move on.  I feel the need to document the idea in great detail and then share it with everyone I know.

It gives me better perspective on why many people associate art with insanity.  The logic of what may be inspirational is so random and strange.  As Calvin would say: "I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul".

I am going to hang it in the dining room and laugh at it every day.

March 19, 2017

I added playing card-inspired drawings of a King and Queen to the Ink section.  The black and white versions are up for now and color versions will be coming soon.  Prints only.

Also, as of yesterday I officially launched my Facebook page for my art: Click here to go there and follow it

March 16, 2017

My newest three drawings are now in the Ink section.  They are an owl who is a good listener, a fish who climbs trees, and a raven who does not value literacy.

March 10, 2017

I haven't had a chance to scan them yet, but several new drawings can be seen on my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook feeds.  Twitter is @katfromkandeart, Insta is @kiwikat.  Go check them out!

January 19, 2017

I uploaded a dapper llama in a scarf to the ink section today.

November 6, 2016

Moving is done and I have a scanner again, so you can find a coffee-loving owl on the ink page.

August 15, 2016

Site updates are suspended temporarily because I'm moving and all my supplies/scanner are in storage.  However, I'm still drawing! You can see what I'm up to on Instagram (username: Kiwikat) or on twitter (@katfromkandeart).  I anticipate I will be able to update the site with new work by mid-September.

You can still buy things as I have my art stored in accessible places.

June 21, 2016

The Pinguins have been populated in the ink section.  They're a very rare bird, a cross between a pin, a penguin, and a raven.  They live on Antarctic ice floes.

I originally doodled in a margin while on a call at work.  I liked the idea so much I redrew them onto nice paper and gave them a proper home.

May 9, 2016

ZIpper the Wooly Bully has been added to the Ink section.  He's named Zipper because of a joke by Brian Regan about Flipper the dolphin.  Essentially he asks why there's never a bad dolphin out there moving safety buoys around.  "That's Zipper, he's surly! He is uncaring".

Anyway, go check him out.

April 16, 2016

Today I uploaded an octopus snuggling his favorite teddy bear.  You can blame this drawing on parenthood and a serious interest in science podcasts.

See, I really like octopi.  They're extremely intelligent and they're dextrous and they're just like aliens on earth.  Fascinating.  So I took one and tried to give him something good to hug.  A couple weeks ago I drew one destoying a ship, but I wasn't interested enough in the ship to make it truly interesting, so I decided on a teddy bear instead.

The teddy bear is heavily influenced by the facial expressions made by my infant son and by Daniel Tiger.  He's meant to feel very cute and floppy and babylike.  So kawaii.  The octopus isn't squeezing him too hard, but tightly enough that his ownership is obvious.  My older son has a similar bear that really gets a beating.

Anyway, I really love how this drawing came out.  Go see it in the ink section.

Also, if you like podcasts and science, You're the Expert is fantastic.  They invite innovative scientists on and have comedians try to guess what they do all day.

April 4, 2016

Two drawings have been added to the ink section today.  In both some sailors are in for terrible surprises - one from a whale and the other from Cthullu himself.

February 14, 2016

I've uploaded an ink drawing of a whale and her octopus companion.  You can find them in the ink section.

February 13, 2016

An ink drawing of a hermit crab with an unusual home has been added to the Ink section.

October 25, 2015

You may have noticed a dearth of updates since March.  It's been a crazy year full of gestating kid #2, and lots of home renovations.  We've been too busy to breathe and as a result I've made a lot less art. Rest assured I haven't given up on art, just taken a brief hiatus.

You may notice today that the painting section is a bit thinned out as I sold and got rid of many things this weekend.  There is still a ton of work in ink available since ink is my main jam nowadays.

June 22, 2015

You may notice my site working more smoothly now (no more breaking in Internet Explorer!) thanks to some savvy web repairs by my lovely husband.  Also - now you have the ability to Facebook like my artwork directly from my site.  Magic!

May 30, 2015

The color version of the Celtic Knotdeer has been added to the Ink section, go see!

May 25, 2015

I apologize for the lack of updates recently.  I am pregnant with my second child and have been feeling very tired and unwell, and not up to making much art.  More to come soon, we're almost to the second trimester!

April 6, 2015

I added a deer with a giant celtic knot for antlers to the ink section.  The black and white version will be in my coloring book, colored version for sale (colored version to be updated shortly... you know, once I color it).

March 27, 2015

I have decided to make a coloring book.  I'll share pages as I draw them. The first page can be found in the "ink" menu. It is a drawing of a whale and an octopus being buds.

Original will be for sale when I get done coloring it.

March 26, 2015

Adding various drawings from the past few weeks to the Ink section today, go check them out.  Includes an elephant, some owls, and a mutant fish.

I have finished my active commissions and am again available for custom requests.  Contact me at .

March 16, 2015

I've been hard at work drawing, walking, and working on personal development.  Today I finished a commissioned drawing for my best friend from childhood.  You can see it here.

Soon I will also add the other commission I finished last week, two new drawings of owls and a fish monster.  Stay tuned!  For more frequent updates check out my Instagram (kiwikat) or my twitter (@katfromkandeart).

March 4, 2015

An ink drawing of a thirsty giraffe has been added to the ink section.  The original has already sold, but you can still buy a print for $25 if you so desire.

February 28, 2015

I just sold 10 pieces out of the bargain bin today, hooray!

I'm making lots of progress on a commissioned painting, you can see it as well as some recent constellation drawings on my twitter (@katfromkandeart) and my instagram (kiwikat).

February 27, 2015

Today begins my month long art sabbatical.  To celebrate I have uploaded an ink drawing of some pinecones.  I picked up a big dry stick of them out on a walk last weekend. The original has already sold, but you can see it or buy a print here.

January 8th, 2015

Happy new year! A monstrous chicken is in the Ink section wreaking havoc on a city.  Go check him out.

November 11, 2014

A very bright green and pink sheep has been spotted in the Ink section

I also added a ton of older drawings to my bargain bin.  For stuff from $10-25 it can't be beat. Get it out of my house before my artistic sabattical in March 2015!

October 26, 2014

I've been having some artist's block lately, so I decided to draw the very first thing that came to mind.  Here is the end product of that, make your own conclusions.

I also added a very detailed drawing of an eye over in my anatomy set of drawings and a retina.  That link will show you both of them - so convenient.

October 14, 2014

Some anatomical drawings of faces I have been working on have been accepted for inclusion in my employer's medical records software!   In terms of impact, Epic's EMR is used to care for roughly half the population of the USA. The eye doctors will use my anatomical drawings of the eye and male and female faces to document issues visually.

They will not be viewable here on the web site (sorry) since I don't want to spread my employer's intellectual property all over the internet.

September 7, 2014

I added collaborative piece done for the wedding of my dear friends.  Wedding guests each contributed a fingerprint "balloon" for the robot bride and groom. View here.

June 25, 2014

I have added a Mermaid Queen with a sea life hairdo to the ink section. Click here to go see her.

May 5, 2014

I drew a fantastic cosmic caribou.  Go check him out.

May 2, 2014

A drawing, "Vanity", has been added.  I tried to make him seem like something weird a monk would draw on the edge of an illuminated manuscript.

April 30, 2014

I purchased a shiny new large format flat bed scanner, so I will be updating the site with print availability and better scans for all my recent work.  This will likely also make me more productive, since my inability to scan wasn't helping my art motivation.  Hooray!

March 25, 2014

I drew a very scary two-headed monster. You can go give him a look over in the ink section.

March 10, 2014

I have added a drawing of a Rabbit to the ink section

January 19, 2014

Added a fox to the other media section. I did the color first in gouache and detail on top with ink. December 29, 2013

Another punk Llama. Just because.

December 12, 2013

I drew a punk llama:

December 1, 2013

Scanner is still not hooked up (where did those darn cables go...?) but the computer with photoshop is back on line.  At any rate, I drew/painted a rainbow bird today.  It can be seen in Other Media.

No official scan/prints available until the scanner works, but you can buy the original for $60.

October 18, 2013

I have been drawing, but my computer where I have photoshop and the scanner has unexpectedly died (video card, very tragic).  We've been too busy to repair it as yet, so I have posted a photo of my newest drawing instead of the normal scanned image.

Head over to the "Ink" section to see "Goldenrod", a bright golden peacock.

September 19, 2013

My employer, Epic, finished their User Group Meeting today, which means my cave paintings have finally gone public.  Head over to the Kandeart blog to see photos inside Deep Space, where I worked on a team of eight people to paint authentic-feeling cave paintings.  Deep Space is Epic's amazing, new, dug-into-the-ground 11,000 person auditorium.  It is cave-themed.

This was by far the largest project I've ever worked on.  In the past I've done murals with my high school art club, and done extensive solo work.  I auditioned to paint in Deep Space thinking maybe I'd paint a normal sized wall, do something large but that would take only a day or two.  Instead I found myself in the construction site getting a tour, and being told that we had both stories of the outer wall of the auditorium - approximately 8 feet tall by 1400 feet total.  11,200 square feet minus spaces for doors and water fountains and such, so more like 5,600 square feet.

It was amazing.  I had a great time and made some wonderful friends while working on the project.  I am very pleased with and proud of my contributions.

So, without further ado, here are the cave paintings I did, some the group did, and my source photos over at the kandeart blog.

August 21, 2013

I'm hard at work painting massive versions of my cave drawings at work. Photos to come next month!

In the meantime, I have refinished the floors in our new house, painted everything, and recovered from a nasty bout of tennis elbow. Glad to be back in the game!

July 8, 2013

Sorry for the lack of recent updates - the purchase of a home coupled with an arm injury have me somewhat sidelined. Thankfully my arm is healing and the house's walls and floors are almost done. Hopefully new art soon!

May 22nd, 2013

It was announced Monday that I and 7 others will get to do the cave paintings at my job. I'm so excited!

May 17th, 2013

I added a post to the Kandeart blog about the process by which I painted The Lorax for a 3 year old girl.

A drawing of a jackalope has been added to the ink section.

December 8, 2012

The 2013 calendar has just been added to the other media section.  $30 for Kandeart on your wall all year long!  Shipping is included.  Order by the 19th and it should be to you right around the start of the new year.

December 2, 2012

A drawing of a zombunny is up on the ink page.

I used Sharpie pen, a crowquill pen, brushes, illustration ink, and Higgins Eternal black ink.  I learned that illustration ink is the only thing I've ever seen that will melt Higgins Eternal ink.  Thankfully, Sharpie Pens and Pitt brush pens hold up to illustration ink very well, and can produce similar effects.

You can get my t-rex or mammoth Christmas cards from years past at Redbubble for $2.50 each.

December 1, 2012

A golden elephant has been added to the ink section.

November 19, 2012

Also: apologies if the site is loading wonky or giving you a "page not found" error.  I believe this is hurricane-related trouble for my web host which will resolve soon.  Hit "refresh" and it should load for you.

October 10, 2012

I've been busy repainting my house, which means all the art came off the walls and I'm overwhelmed by the vastness of my portfolio.  To help unbury myself, I've lowered prices sitewide.  The bargain bin is full of new reductions, and everything everywhere is now quite a bit cheaper. It's a great chance to score some original art without taking a huge chunk out of your wallet.  Enjoy!

September 29, 2012

New blog post at the kandeart blog.

September 14, 2012

A new ink drawing can be found (logically enough) in the ink section!  It's a western grasshopper.

August 27, 2012

More art to come soon!  I've been away on an RV trip to the Badlands of South Dakota, Yellowstone, Zion, and the Grand Canyon for the last three weeks, which left me with little time for art.  However, the baby has demanded I draw him some new stuff for his room, so soon there will be new blue things.

July 23, 2012

A new gouache and ink piece is up in the "other media" section.  "Gruff" is a painting/drawing of a billygoat.

June 12, 2012

On June 9th at 4:48 am I completed my latest project:

Jeffrey William Hodgson-Anderson was 7 pounds 7 ounces and 20.5 inches long.

June 7th, 2012

My drawing, Barn Owl, was featured on the RedBubble main page on June 2nd!  (bottom left image)

November 26, 2011

The ink section has been updated with a drawing of a walrus taking a bath.

November 17, 2011

Sorry for the lack of updates lately.  I've been busy traveling to Germany, working on my skull-drawing skills (mostly ugly practice), and learned a while ago that I'm pregnant with my first child.

Learning new drawing skills is very humbling.  I'm very used to being able to draw or paint whatever I feel like, having to start from scratch and practice a lot is reminding me of the basics.

Here's a teaser, the first decent skull/face I drew today after about 30 attempts:

October 15, 2011

I'm working through Andrew Loomis' amazing textbook on drawing hands and faces.  In the "sets" section you can see a drawing of  variety of skull shapes, one of the first exercises in the text.

You can download Andrew Loomis' excellent art-instruction textbooks from a link I posted to the blog..  They're public domain!

September 18, 2011

A teaser image of my newest commissioned gouache and ink piece can be seen on the blog!

A drawing of an owl has been added to the ink section.  It involves two of my favorite things: picky detail with black ink and large blocks of color.

There's a post over at the blog showing the process.

August 30th, 2011

Go check out the blog at, I had a business philosophy moment of clarity while trying to draw a foot.

August 14th, 2011

There's a new gouache and ink piece in the other media section, a sleepy bear resting in a field.  Also, today marks the launch of Http://, my new art blog!  You can see in-progress photos of drawings, commentary on technique, and sometimes corny jokes. Today I updated with a very thorough post on how I painted the new bear piece.

August 6th

A gouache and ink piece featuring a pair of whales has been added to the other media section.

July 22nd

There is a new drawing of an interplanetary explorer in the ink section.

July 16th

The "other media" section has been updated with a gentlemanatee done in ink and gouache.

My first experiment mixing gouache paint with ink is now in the "other media" section. It's a warmly colored llama.

June 25th

My friend, Liz, suggested that I draw a one-eyed Beaver.  You can see him now in the "Ink" section.

June 13th

Expect some interesting updates soon.  I've purchased my first set of gouache paints - let the experimentation begin!

May 28th

I've added a drawing I began last week.  I drew a baby sea turtle and it was my husband's suggestion to draw him flying through space.  The result, "Bernard's Dream", is one of my favorite recent drawings. It can be found in the ink section.

April 30th 2011

I painted a fish today, you can see him in the painting section.

I've been very busy lately, so I've been finishing some drawings but not taking the time to upload them.  I just uploaded four new drawings to the ink section today, so enjoy the sudden bonanza!

April 24th 2011

Updated the ink drawings section with a bear.

March 25th 2011

I have a snapshot of a painting I did in January up in the painting section.  It's my cat, Dopey, who apparently thinks we're weird and alarming.

March 21st 2011

The paintings section has been updated with my latest.  I did the whole thing from start to finish this evening after work and I really like it.

March 17th 2011

I drew another drawing for the silent auction.  It's a pair of rare birds.  It can be found in the ink section.

March 11th 2011

A drawing of an owl has been added to the ink section.

February 7th 2011

A new drawing, norma lateralis, has been added to the anatomy series.  It can be found in the "sets" section.

Does anyone know of an utterly bulletproof, undissolvable black ink with a precision pen tip?

I find that every black pen I use dissolves when colored over with Prismacolor if I'm using translucent marker paper.   Email me if you have a reccomendation.

February 6th 2011

The opening reception for the art show at the Gallery at Yahara Bay was last night.  A sincere thanks to everyone who came, and to my co-displayer Steve Wilcox.  It was a wonderful evening.

New painting in the paintings section!  This was a commissioned piece, so sadly it is not for sale!

January 4th, 2011

The show will have live music by Jeff Lindsay, munchy food, and liquors from Yahara Bay.

December 24th, 2010

A drawing of a planet has been added to the ink section.  I liked it, so I put a ring on it.

Calendars can still be ordered until December 26th, they can be found in the Ink section.

December 22nd, 2010

A drawing of a bird with colorful plumage has been added to the ink section.

I will be having a shared exhibition with Steve Wilcox at the Gallery at Yahara Bay beginning on February 5th.  More details to follow.

December 17th, 2010

The 2011 calendar is now available for purchase in the ink section!

Only available until December 25th, so order early and order often.

December 8th, 2010

Christmas decorating is done for the season!

This is the second year we've decorated the string tree.  Icicle-style lights work the best and they don't do any harm to the tree as long as you're careful putting them on.  My husband gets co-artist credit on this one; I made the string tree and he lit it up.

November 29, 2010

Tonight I added a new anatomy drawing to the "sets" page.  It's a labeled diagram of the major arteries of the human neck/skull.

On a personal note, my dad and I just passed the six month mark for my having given him my kidney.  We've both had our follow-up testing and are doing extremely well.

November 18, 2010

I finished my commission! Here is a low-quality photo preview:

Now I just have to build a frame and make the frame look like a TV. My friend, Ray, commissioned this to hang on the front of his TV. It's supposed to look like you're looking through the TV at people watching TV in a mirror universe.

November 13, 2010

I'm still working on a commissioned painting, so I haven't been drawing much.  However, today there is an update to the ink section, a drawing of a dandelion.  I found a very old book about common weeds from South Dakota at my grandparents' house, and it's proven very inspiring.

Updates may be sporadic in the coming weeks as I am currently focusing on a commissioned painting.  However, prints of previous work and many originals are still available for purchase.

October 2010

Updates may be sporadic in the coming weeks as I am currently focusing on a commissioned painting.  However, prints of previous work and many originals are still available for purchase.

September 16th 2010

A drawing of a giraffe has been added to the ink section.  It's a big one, too.  I usually work fairly small in ink, 11x14 or 9x12.  However, this one is a 14x17.  I had a lot of fun with it and was a little less controlled than usual with my lines and colors.

September 5th 2010

A round owl has been added to the ink section.

September 2nd

A baffled dodo has been added to the ink section.  He was done without a photo reference, which is somewhat rare for me.  I had a lot of fun with the texture.

August 24th 2010

Bessie the cow lives in the ink section now.  I think she may have gotten into some bad hay.

You can buy a t-shirt, sticker, or baby onesie of Bessie at by clicking here

August 15th 2010

Today I have uploaded a very detailed ink drawing of a lizard.  It can be found, shockingly, in the ink section.

Here is a sneak peek:

August 4th 2010

A small albino octopus has been added to the ink section today.

August 3rd 2010

A new painting is done (but not uploaded yet- busybusybusy).  Tonight I have added a drawing of a rhinoceros as suggested by Marcin.

July 23rd

I have uploaded a new painting of a tree frog.  It's acrylic with Sharpie marker on top, a technique suggested by my friend, Jeremy.  This allows me to use my usual bold painting colors while also using my typical black linework.

July 22nd 2010

A new drawing of a red bird can be seen in the inks section.

July 14th 2010

Once my dad told me that he would enjoy it if I drew pictures of animals smoking cigarettes.  He thought it would be interesting if done in my style.  Now whenever I can't think of what to draw I sketch some animal indulging in nicotine.  It has become one of my favorite reoccuring bits of subject matter.

This is relevant as a new drawing of a smoking elephant has been added to the ink section.

July 8th 2010

There is a new painting in the painting section today.

July 6th 2010

A silly sketch of a dodo has been uploaded to the inks section.

May 27th 2010

Updated the inks section with a drawing of an evil octopus

May 26th 2010

Surgery was successful and both dad and I are in the process of recovering.  Thankfully my kidney is working splendidly for my father.  The surgeons say I am healing well and should be back to normal activity in another 2-4 weeks.

Art updates should start up again soon, I have an octopus to upload and am working on some paintings.

May 5th 2010

I will be taking a hiatus from website updates for a few weeks while I give my father my left kidney.

Art updates shall commence in late May or early June as soon as I'm up to drawing again.

Today we have a fix to the site!  The scrollbars don't reset when you click a thumbnail now, so the ink section especially is much easier to browse.  Thanks to Corey of Mythic Web Design for the awesome upgrade!

Well, I just finished my final drawing for my totally free mystery discount artpost!

There are five drawings total that will not be shown until they've been won.  They're my five most recent drawings and I quite like all of them.  The discount post will be Saturday March the 6th.  Beginning at noon central time I will place certain of my artworks into the bargain bin at reduced prices.  The first five people to purchase art on that date will have their choice (in order of purchase).

I will reveal them here on my website as they are won and selected.

Also there is a new ink drawing.
